An evening of remembrance also served as an opportunity for healing for residents of Cumberland House during the first annual Blue Christmas Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 11.
“As we enter the Christmas season, many people find themselves grieving loved ones who are no longer here to share this festive time,” explained Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Nurse Practitioner Christine Firman-Depeel. “The Cumberland House Health clinic staff wanted to invite the community to share in an evening of remembrance.”
Local residents often associate the health centre with trauma, sickness and loss. Providing an opportunity for fellowship and connection at the centre helped to create a more welcoming environment for those attending.
During the opening prayer led by mayor Kelvin McKay, participants joined hands in a circle around the tree.
“It was very emotional,” Firman-Depeel said.
Ornaments with the names of lost loved ones were placed on the memorial tree and will be on display throughout the holiday season.
Staff at the Cumberland House Health Centre hosted the first of what they hope will become an annual Blue Christmas Memorial Christmas tree lighting and remembrance event earlier this month.
