Meals on Wheels is a program that provides a hot nutritious meal prepared by the dietary staff in the Long Term Care facilities to Home Care clients that are in need of assistance in our communities. Having a nourishing meal delivered helps people in our communities maintain their independence in their homes.
Volunteers are vital to supporting the program as they deliver the meals to clients in their community. Volunteers are currently needed to help with the delivery of meals in Assiniboia, Lafleche and Moose Jaw.
Gord and Darleen Stewart have been delivering meals on wheels in Moose Jaw for over 30 years. When they started volunteering in the 1980s, they could only deliver on Saturdays and holidays as both were working.
“We would take our son Craig with us to deliver the meals,” says Darleen.
“After you have done the route a few times, you get to know the people and it’s nice to say hello and see how they are doing. It’s the people that make you want to do it again and they appreciate it. For some of them, we may be their only visitors that day. It’s easy to do and we enjoy getting out,” says Gord Stewart.
