Did you know we encourage patients to visit with their families and guests whenever possible, to the degree they are comfortable and able? An open family presence is an important part of our commitment to patient and family centred care. We also accommodate and encourage patients that may wish to have a support(s) with them when meeting their physician and/or care givers to help with questions and information sharing.
Recognizing that families and caregivers are an integral part of the collaborative care team, the Open Family Presence Policy invites and enables partnerships among care providers and patients and families.
There are only a few areas where there may be specific guidelines around open family presence , such as in intensive care areas where there may be many other patients, in specialized units like maternity, in cases where special contact restrictions are in place to keep everyone safe, and when there may be concerns about the ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
We ask that families and guests perform hand hygiene with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub, upon entering and leaving a patient’s room. This helps ensure their safety and yours.
One additional consideration is gifts for those in hospital. We ask that if you choose to bring someone in hospital a present, please ensure the item has minimal scent (this includes flowers), and is latex-free. If you wish to bring food, make sure to speak with care providers first to make sure it is appropriate for the patient and those who may come in contact with it.
