Did you know that the most common form of diabetes, type 2, can be prevented?
That’s right; you can delay and, in many cases, even prevent type 2 diabetes by eating healthy foods, getting more active on a regular basis, and losing five to 10 per cent of your starting weight. You don’t need to completely cut out certain types of foods or run the next marathon, but by using tools like the new Canada Food Guide to help guide your food decisions and being active for at least 150 minutes per week (or approximately 22 minutes a day) you can make some significant improvements to your health.
If you’d like to find out more about your risk for diabetes and other tools to help you delay or prevent it, check out the Diabetes Canada website or talk to your health care provider.
A blood glucose monitor is one tool in the diabetes management toolbox.
