Did you know that after death, you may be able to donate a portion of your eyes and give the gift of sight?
There are approximately 100 people on the cornea transplant waiting list in Saskatchewan.
Since the inception of the Saskatchewan Health Authority Organ and Tissue Donation Program, there has been an increase in corneal donors. For all of 2018, there were 36 people who were able to become cornea donors, whereas for 2019, already there have been 46 corneal donors.
“We are hoping with increased staff education and public awareness, we can continue to see the number of those choosing to give the gift of sight rise,” says Melissa Racine, manager of the Eye Care Centre at Saskatoon City Hospital. “Please speak to your family to find out their wishes about organ and tissue donation – including cornea donation – and let them know yours.”
