Dr. Erin Beresh achieved not one, but three firsts in the Melfort Hospital Operating Room (OR) on Saturday, November 10. Of historical significance, Beresh was the surgeon on the first all-female surgical team to operate at the Melfort Hospital.
The first all-female surgical team at Melfort Hospital took the opportunity to capture the historical moment after performing a successful c-section on November 10. (L-R) Dr. Erin Beresh, Dr. Stephanie Nyberg, Registered Nurses Pattie Shiels and Marilyn Kiefer, Licensed Practical Nurse Leeann Vhal, and Dr. Chelsea Wilgenbusch.
Beresh, the first permanent female surgeon in the history of Melfort Hospital, was supported by Dr. Chelsea Wilgenbusch (anesthetist on-call), Dr. Stephanie Nyberg (physician on-call), and an all-female nursing team. As luck would have it, the emergency caesarean, which also happened to be Beresh’s first solo cesearean, resulted in the delivery of a healthy baby girl.
It wasn’t until the team had assembled in the OR that they realized the historical significance of the surgery. “Dr. Nyberg thought we should probably take a photo to document the occasion,” Beresh explained.
“It was pretty exciting for me,” recalled Beresh, who started practising in Melfort October 1. “It was nice as the new person and the first female surgeon to be a part of it. It was very fulfilling. I am very happy and very lucky.”
