Dr. Sharon Leibel has been nominated for a YWCA of Regina Women of Distinction award in 2020.
Dr. Leibel was nominated by her current and former team mates specializing in child abuse, Barb Beaurivage, Dr. Sarah Liskowich, Dr. Deb Seibel and Sergeant Shawn Fenwick of the Regina Police Service’s Regina Child Justice Centre.
Sharon Leibel was one of the initial members and helped create the first and only child maltreatment team in Saskatchewan.
Dr. Sharon Leibel
“Dr. Leibel serves the most vulnerable of our population: abused children,” said Dr. Liskowich. “She always gives of herself, her knowledge, her time and her expertise and support to her team members so that the child’s best interest is served.”
Barb Beaurivage, a Nurse Practitioner and teammate on the child maltreatment team, noted, “Sharon is able to be a positive force on our team. This work can be very demoralizing, yet she is able to remain positive. She continues to give selflessly to our team members, to the community and especially to the vulnerable child and their family.”
Dr. Leibel has been the medical forensic examiner in over 1,000 child abuse cases and spent more than 100,000 hours on call for the child maltreatment team she helped to found. She has trained and mentored over 20 team members and hundreds of physicians in training, police officers, social workers, nurses, court prosecutors and judges. Although this work is very difficult, she is able to continue day in and day out with a positive attitude and never lose her humanity. Sharon is an advocate and innovator who tirelessly shares her knowledge and passion for children in need.
Dr. Leibel also has a full-time family practice in Regina and is a long-time, well respected member of the province's family practitioners.
