The Resident Doctors of Saskatchewan and the Student Medical Society of Saskatchewan have partnered to launch a Feeding Saskatchewan campaign to raise funds for the 32 food banks across the province. The initial goal of the campaign is to raise $35,000 by June 22, 2020. This amount will feed everyone in the province who uses food banks for one week.
So far, they have raised $10,000 towards their goal. Resident Doctors of Saskatchewan donated $3,000.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the province’s food banks have seen an increase in demand and require additional resources to continue serving the community while protecting staff, volunteers and clients. The Food Banks of Saskatchewan has identified a $6 million goal.
“As medical trainees, we have been taught not only to care about the active health issues of our patients but also the social determinants of health, including secure access to food. We train across the province and recognize that many of our neighbours are struggling right now. We know that the demand for food banks has surged and so resident doctors and medical students wanted to help,” said Dr. Ben Arenson, Internal Medicine resident doctor.
