Ordering recommendation
Please provide drug dose information, frequency, method and date and time of last dose prior to draw on the National Jewish Pharmacokinetics requisition.
- If the exact time of dose and blood draw are not accurately recorded, accurate interpretation cannot be provided by the reference laboratory.
Test ordering requirements
Preferred specimen collection
- Send patient to a PSC or to Hospital Test Centre for collection, if unable to process within the required time frame.
Forms required
- Fully complete Pharmacokinetics requisition, including drug dose amount, frequency, method, and date and time of last dose prior to draw (available on National Jewish website)
Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Red (non-gel)
- Alternative collection container: Lithium heparin (dark green, non-gel); not preferred
Collection procedure
- Aliquot and freeze serum as soon as possible after collection or within 6 hours
Required volume
- Optimal volume: Two 4.0 mL full collection tubes
- Minimum volume: 2 mL serum
- (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
- Pediatric volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma
Transport and stability
- Stable for up to 6 hours at room temperature
- Ship frozen on dry ice
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
