More than a meal: volunteers make meals on wheels possible
Meals on Wheels is much more than a meal delivery service. It is a true SHA collaboration that brings together home care, food services, volunteer services and dedicated volunteers who help people remain independent in their own homes.
Last year, nearly 1,400 volunteers contributed more than 22,000 hours as Meals on Wheels delivery drivers. Their efforts provided nutritious meals for clients in almost 60 communities across Saskatchewan.
For many recipients, a Meals on Wheels volunteer may be one of the only people they see that day, offering not only a meal but also a friendly visit and meaningful connection.
As a primary care essential service, Meals on Wheels operates up to seven days a week, with volunteers delivering meals in all kinds of weather.
For Swift Current volunteer Jim, the reason he started volunteering comes with a touch of humour.
“My wife tells me to,” he joked.
But his deeper motivation is service to others.
“It’s a way to serve others who deserve all the respect and help we can offer. My parents modelled unlimited volunteering, so I feel connected to their memory as I serve others.”
In Estevan, volunteers Hilda and Genevieve have delivered meals together for many years.
“It’s nice to see the smiles on the faces of the people to whom we deliver a meal,” says Genevieve.
Every delivery represents compassionate care, safe connection and community. Volunteers are making a difference, one meal at a time.
