What area of healthcare do you work in? Where do you work?
I work full time as a Nurse Practitioner with Prince Albert Home Care.
In addition, I spend one day a week with the Prince Albert Community Wellness Bus—a mobile primary healthcare clinic that serves individuals throughout the city.
What are you responsible for as a Nurse Practitioner? Please describe a typical day at work.
In my home care role, I support clients who are homebound and or lack access to primary care providers, offering both primary care services and care coordination. I also work closely with the palliative care team on symptom management and adjustments to treatment plans when necessary.
On the Wellness Bus, I provide a wide range of primary healthcare services. These include diagnosing and treating common illnesses, managing chronic conditions, conducting medical exams, prescribing medications, delivering preventive care and health education and referring patients to other healthcare providers as needed.
How is your work-life balance as a Nurse Practitioner?
I currently work Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and that schedule gives me an amazing work-life balance! Earlier in my career as a Registered Nurse, I worked weekdays with occasional on-call shifts, and before that, I did shift work—including nights and weekends.
Now, I love spending my mornings getting my kids ready for school and I have evenings free to help them with homework and activities. I’m always home for supper, and my weekends are free. I love the predictable schedule!
Have you always wanted to be a Nurse Practitioner? Tell us more about your career path!
I’ve been a nurse for 17 years and moved to Saskatchewan twelve years ago. From early in my career, I knew I wanted to be more involved in my patients’ care, not just during isolated visits, but throughout their entire health journey. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner gave me the opportunity to do exactly that.
I was driven by the desire to make a lasting impact by helping patients manage their health over time. As a Nurse Practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of building long-term, meaningful relationships with patients across their lifespan from infancy to old age, and that’s been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey.
Are there opportunities to further your career as a Nurse Practitioner?
Absolutely! There are so many ways to grow as a Nurse Practitioner. You can pursue advanced certifications to expand your skill set and broaden your scope of practice. You can also choose to specialize in areas like oncology, palliative care, or mental health, get involved in research or teaching, or move into leadership and policy roles. Specializing allows you to deepen your expertise, focus on patient populations you’re passionate about, and make a greater impact in your field.
The NP role is incredibly dynamic, and lifelong learning is not just encouraged—it’s essential. Every day brings new challenges, and staying up to date with the latest guidelines and treatment options is an important part of the job. In this profession, learning never stops. That’s what makes it so exciting and fulfilling—it’s a career that constantly evolves and pushes you to grow.
Do you have any advice for students or new graduates looking to pursue a career as a Nurse Practitioner? Are there specialty areas that are in more demand than others?
My advice is to start by gaining strong clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.
I also recommend doing some volunteer work - it not only broadens your perspective but can significantly strengthen your application, especially since admission to NP programs is highly competitive.
One of the greatest strengths of this profession is its flexibility—you can work in a wide variety of settings like family practice, emergency, mental health, geriatrics, pediatrics, oncology, and more. These areas offer both impactful work and plenty of opportunities for personal and professional growth. There’s growing demand across the board, especially in rural and underserved communities.
What is the number one thing you love about being a Nurse Practitioner?
I love the variety this role offers—caring for patients of all ages, from infants to those over 100 and managing a wide range of conditions and procedures. No two days are the same, and that diversity keeps me constantly learning and engaged!
I also value strong collaboration and learning with physicians, specialists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and other members of the healthcare team to ensure patients receive the highest quality care. Every day is a chance to learn something new from different people.
Being able to follow a patient’s journey over time and support them through life’s health challenges is incredibly rewarding!
