Driver Assessment Program (DAP)

• Driver Assessment Program (DAP) is located in the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina and Driver Evaluation Program (DEP) is part of Kinetik Rehabilitation Services in Saskatoon. 
• Both DAP and DEP provide comprehensive fee for service functional based assessments to determine an individual's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. 
• Referrals may come from SGI, a physician or nurse practitioner, therapist, family member or through self-referral.

• Driving is a highly valued activity which provides people with mobility, freedom, and independence. 
• It is both a responsibility and a privilege, but it is not a right.
• Unfortunately, illness, injury, or other health conditions may affect a person’s ability to drive safely, due to changes in vision, thinking, or mobility.
• Any driver that has a health condition that may affect their driving has a legal obligation to report to SGI.

Referral Process

• If you have a referral to attend the clinic you will need to call the office to initiate an assessment.
• Prior to scheduling an assessment, our team will mail you forms to complete to help determine if you are eligible for assessment.
• Please note that you must have medical clearance from your medical provider in order to attend.
• Once the team has collected all the information required and deemed you to be eligible you will be contacted to book an assessment.

In-Clinic Assessment

• You will be seen for in-clinic assessment with an occupational therapist (OT). 
• The assessment will include an interview about your medical and driving history, personal situation, driving goals, and supports in your community.
• Special tests are done to see if you have the skills needed for safe driving. 
• Tests may include physical tasks, pencil and paper tests, computer, and video tests. 
• The in-clinic assessment typically can take 2-3 hours to complete.

On-Road Assessment

• A second appointment for an on-road assessment may be scheduled. 
• The on-road assessment is done by the OT and a driving instructor in a vehicle provided (you will not be using your own vehicle).
• This assessment lasts about 60 to 90 minutes and it may take place on the same day or a different day than the assessment.
• The on-road assessment will start in quiet areas and only proceed to busier areas if it is safe to do so. 
• City driving and highway driving will be assessed as appropriate to the individual driver.

Results

• The OT will advise you of the results of your assessment and the recommendation to be made to SGI about your medical fitness to drive. 
• These recommendations may include the need for more training or specialized equipment. 
• In some cases, the recommendation will be made to retire from or stop driving. 
• This decision is not made lightly and will be based on your performance on the day of assessment. 
• Please note that the final decision of whether or not to issue or suspend a license remains the responsibility of SGI.
