Saskatoon City Hospital Acute Care Capacity Expansion update
What’s happening?
Expansion of Saskatoon City Hospital (SCH) is underway to help meet the growing demand for care in our communities.
Over the next year, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) will add 109 acute care beds to SCH — the equivalent of opening a new regional hospital. This includes 60 medicine beds, 22 for rehabilitation, 12 for rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injuries (ABI) and 15 high acuity beds.
To support this growth, the SHA is hiring more than 400 additional staff and physicians, renovating key areas of the hospital and relocating select outpatient services from SCH to community spaces. Continuing care patients will transition out of hospital to a setting in the community that is appropriate for their needs.
What’s new?
Design, construction and planning updates:
- The first 20 medicine beds on units 6200 and 6300 are scheduled to open August 11. These beds are currently being transitioned from the Transitional Care and Convalescent Units, with better alignment for the needs of medicine patients.
- Renovations have begun to create a reception area for the public and patient entrance to the units.
- Plans in place to upgrade the nurse call system.
- Physician coverage has been secured with Internal Medicine.
- Design reviews continue for the programs relocating to Market Mall and for the new inpatient units at Saskatoon City Hospital.
- The new program spaces at Market Mall have been selected and construction barriers are now in place to prepare for upcoming work. Renovations are scheduled to begin this fall.
- Operational planning is underway to focus on model of care and workflows.
- The SHA is working with long-term care homes in Saskatoon to better support residents with complex needs, including expanding short stay capacity. This work will help improve patient flow and ensure timely transitions for residents with higher care needs.
Thank you to everyone involved for your dedication and continued support in making this major health system improvement a reality!
