Recognition of Nursing Competence Protocol - Effective May 21, 2026
- The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) respects frontline experience and expertise.
- Nurses who demonstrate current competence in a new provincial policy / procedure /
standard or other clinical guidance document previously supported by a repealed local
policy may be recognized as competent to continue practice. - Nurses remain responsible for identifying and addressing knowledge or practice gaps,
consistent with regulatory and employment expectations for competence, accountability
and safe patient care. - Recognition of Competence helps avoid unnecessary retraining.
- Local clinical leadership (Manager, CNE, CRN, Nurse B etc.) judgment is essential.
- This protocol does not apply to annual or continuing competence requirements
