Least Restraint – Clinical Resources
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is committed to the use of restraints as an unusual and temporary measure, used only as a last resort to maintain the safety of patients, visitors, and staff.
The Least Restraint Program is a provincial program that supports Accreditation Canada standards and "Ministry of Health Program Guidelines for Special Care Homes" requirements while promoting a restraint-free environment.
A pilot of the Least Restraint clinical standard and procedure will begin on October 1, 2026, over a two-month period, within selected Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) teams and care settings. The pilot will evaluate a standardized provincial approach to restraint use before broader implementation across SHA. Broad consultation will take place simultaneously over a one-month period in November 2026.
