SAFE Cycle
What is the SAFE Cycle?
The SAFE Cycle is a decision making tool that can be used to process staff safety related hazards, incidents, and improvement ideas. When we identify a staff safety hazard, gap, or opportunity, the cycle helps us make a plan to address it, and see it through to completion, to ensure a thorough and impactful outcome.
- Identify - The ways that we become aware of staff safety hazards, gaps, and opportunities
- Respond - The tasks we perform to restore safety, learn more, and identify potential solutions
- Control - The actions we take to eliminate or reduce the risk of a hazard causing harm
- Integrate - How we weave the management of controls into our everyday practices
- Sustain - The ways we maintain or support a process continuously over time
Staff Participation
Frequent and meaningful staff engagement in safety is essential, both to successful use of the SAFE Cycle and to building positive and impactful safety culture.
