Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Blood – Gold (gel) or Red (no gel)
- Alternative collection container: Blood – Light Green (Lithium Heparin gel)
Collection procedure
- Biotin therapy: If biotin has been administered make notation on requisition when last dose was administered
- Transport specimen immediately to the Chemistry laboratory
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4.5 mL full collection tube
- Minimum/pediatric volume: 0.5 mL whole blood
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- 4 weeks at 2 - 6°C

- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed

- Results reported within 2 hours
- Confirmatory testing of positive screen reported up to 5 days
Reflex testing
- Confirmatory testing will be sent to the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory (RRPL). Screen positive test results will be used to initiate prophylactic therapy in consultation with the Microbiologist On Call and Infectious Disease specialist.
Specimen retention time
- Regular samples: 2 - 8 ºC for 3 days
- Transplant samples: -80ºC freezer for 10 years from time of donation
