The bison and the sparrow find a home at Canora Gateway Lodge
Residents, visitors and staff at Canora Gateway Lodge are being welcomed by a meaningful new addition to the home's front foyer.
Earlier this year, the Yorkton Tribal Council gifted The Bison and the Sparrow, a striking artwork by Saskatchewan artist Darnell Tapequon, after learning the lodge was hoping to display Indigenous artwork created by local artists. The opportunity came about when Conjeevaram Venkata Parameshwaran, Nutrition and Food Services Specialist, shared the idea during a meeting with Chief Isabel O'Soup, who generously presented the piece.
Rooted in Indigenous teachings, the artwork symbolizes endurance, humility, balance and respect. The bison represents generosity and the enduring relationship between people and the land, while the sparrow reminds us that wisdom and responsibility belong to everyone, regardless of size.
"The image and message are timeless sentiments that we all need to embrace and live by," said Leanne Buchinski, Continuing Care Manager. "After displaying the art piece on the fireplace mantle, it was decided to move this artwork to our front foyer where residents, visitors and staff can pause, appreciate its beauty and discover a renewed meaning and perspective through the artwork."
