Dementia-friendly patio creates a safe outdoor space
Residents living at Ross Payant Nursing Home in Assiniboia now have a safe and welcoming space to enjoy the outdoors following the opening of the facility’s dementia-friendly front patio.
Enclosed with a secure gate, the patio features a clearly defined looping path with low contrast colours to help avoid confusion or the appearance of drop-offs, along with minimal slopes and no steps.
The project began in 2018 with an idea to create an outdoor environment where residents could safely enjoy fresh air, spend time with family, and remain connected to their surroundings.
Community members, staff and families helped move the project forward, including a fundraising effort launched in March 2024 by the Ross Payant Patio Fundraising Committee. The patio was designed by John Robinson, with a committee helping guide the project through planning and development.
“This space gives our residents an opportunity to safely enjoy being outdoors and spend meaningful time with the people important to them,” said Carli Fjeldberg, Health Services manager.
The patio officially opened July 7, marking the culmination of years of collaboration and community support.
