Superheroes raise spirits and funds at Regina General Hospital

Some of the smallest patients at Regina General Hospital had a super day on Sept. 10 when the Regina Police Service’s SWAT team visited.

The officers wore superhero costumes while rappelling down the building, before visiting the pediatric unit to bring smiles, encouragement and a little extra excitement to patients and families there.

It was an effort to not only raise spirits, but to raise money for the Hospitals of Regina Foundation to support the enhancement to enhance pediatric services and ensure children and families have access to care close to home.

The visit offered patients and families an opportunity to meet their favourite superheroes while giving first responders a chance to connect with the community in a different way

For Cst. Paul McNutt of the Regina Police Service SWAT team, who suited up as Captain America, the event is about creating positive moments for children who may be spending time away from school, friends and their regular routines. 
"We don't always get to interact with kids and families the way we might like to," said McNutt. "It's nice to be able to interact with kids and families in a way that's more positive, fun-loving and exciting."

Cst. McNutt described bravery as facing fears and challenges, even when the situation is difficult or uncertain. Children receiving treatment often face medical procedures, unfamiliar environments and long recoveries, yet continue showing remarkable courage every day.

"Kids at the hospital didn't ask for this to happen to them, but they're showing up every day to face their fears," he said.
