Compassionate programming builds new experiences for residents
Memories of past harvests were brought to life in Wolseley this fall.
Staff at Wolseley Memorial Integrated Care Centre created a harvest program for residents of varying mobility levels, many of whom have deep ties to grain farming.
Recognizing that farming was a significant part of residents’ lives, the recreation team at the centre created an inclusive celebration filled with nostalgia, featuring familiar sights, sounds, and activities — from pumpkin bowling and tractor pulls to grain guessing games, country music, food and memorable photos.
“The program offered residents a chance to reminisce, socialize, and engage, honouring their experiences and bringing joy to their day,” said Jessica Derow, Recreation Coordinator, Wolseley Memorial Integrated Care Centre. “Residents expressed appreciation for the creativity and familiarity, sharing smiles and stories of their farming experience throughout the event.”
For the event, a resident’s family donated grain for games, and prizes, including hats and John Deere toy tractors were donated by Pattison Agriculture in Balcarres to all participants.
Understanding the specialized needs of residents and tailoring activities to their unique abilities and backgrounds exemplifies one of SHA’s key values: Compassion. SHA staff at the Wolseley Memorial Integrated Care Centre embody this value by connecting with residents in meaningful ways that celebrate their history and foster a sense of belonging, as part of the SHA’s CARES values (compassion, accountability, respect, equity, and safety).
