Elders bring comfort, culture and healing to patients
Cultural advisors with First Nations and Métis Health walk alongside patients like family. Through conversation, story and traditional practices like smudging, they bring comfort and cultural understanding to what can be an overwhelming experience.
When complex medical language leaves patients uncertain, a story can make it clear. When the hospital feels isolating, a familiar presence can make it feel safe.
“I’m here to cheer you up. I’m here to guide you,” said Vernon Linklater, one of the cultural advisors.
“I’m here to support you. I’m here to encourage you in your journey and onto the healing of your life.”
Sometimes healing is about more than medicine. Sometimes it is also about being cared for in a way that feels grounded in who you are.
