Folk Fest brings global flavours to long-term care
Residents at The Meadows long-term care home in Swift Current celebrated cultures from around the world during its annual Folk Fest on April 15.
The event featured traditional foods, cultural displays, and activities representing nine countries and cultures. In the weeks leading up to the festival, residents participated in Recreation Therapy's "Armchair Travels" program, learning about each country through educational displays, collecting passport stamps, and exploring cultures from around the globe.
Fifteen residents helped prepare many of the dishes served during the event, including Indian chaat, Turkish borek, Nigerian puff puff and zobo, Mongolian beef, Latvian barley risotto and Indigenous-inspired dishes. Residents also enjoyed themed photo opportunities and later participated in a drum circle led by Capacities Unleashed.
"Their engagement brings authenticity and pride to the event, making it a truly collaborative celebration," said Jackie VanStone, Director, Continuing Care SW 4 & 5. "The Folk Festival is always a highlight of the year; a wonderful day filled with connection, culture and enjoyment for everyone involved."
Approximately 85 to 100 residents attended, making this year's Folk Fest the most successful yet.
