Picture-Based Communication Tool for Patients and Families
At the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), we understand that communication is essential to safe, compassionate, and patient-centred care. For patients, residents, or clients who are non-verbal or have limited speech, expressing needs and feelings can sometimes be challenging.
To help, SHA offers a Picture-Based Communication Tool that uses simple, easy-to-understand images. These images allow individuals to communicate their needs, preferences, feelings, and concerns more easily. This tool helps build understanding between patients and care providers and supports more comfortable, confident participation in care decisions.
The tool is available in 16 languages, including Cree, Dene, and Michif. This ensures that Indigenous and newcomer families can communicate in ways that respect their language, culture, and identity.
We encourage families and caregivers to use this resource to support their loved ones during their care experience.
If you would like a copy of the Picture-Based Communication Tool, please speak with your care provider or a member of your health-care team.
