Pick up containers of formalin from Histology laboratory gross room #2854 (RUH).
Collection procedure
- Notify Histology laboratory (RUH) in advance at 655-2210 in order to ensure technologists are available to process the specimen.
- Pick up containers of formalin and glutaraldehyde from Histology laboratory gross room #2854 (RUH).
- Label containers with patient’s last name, first name and personal health number (PHN).
- Five good sized pieces of specimen are required. Place four pieces in formalin and one piece in glutaraldehyde.
- Complete Surgical Pathology Requisition form #4030 with patient’s addressograph, specimen type, all relevant clinical history and physician’s signature.
- Deliver to Histology laboratory along with completed requisition. Place in refrigerator.

prior to discard) -

Methodology
- Testing for antibody mediated rejection is referred to Edmonton for testing
Days/times performed
Availability:
- Monday to Friday (excluding statutory holidays), 8:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m.
- STAT testing available on a call back basis as required. Must be cleared by pathologist-on-call.

Specimen retention time
- Specimen which has been submitted for paraffin processing will be maintained as per CPSS Retention Guidelines (i.e. Specimens from patients 0-17 years retained for 50 years; specimens from patients 18 years and older retained for 20 years).
- Formalin fixed unprocessed tissue retained for 4 weeks following sign out by a pathologist.
